ISLAND GARDEN

In Progress

This garden occupies a central position within the township of Balemartine on the Isle of Tiree. An existing gravel path runs through the site and must be retained, reflecting its working historical use as a shared thoroughfare providing access to the old petrol station (now garage) and the adjoining property which was the The Old Store.

The aim of the garden redesign is to create a more natural and fluid connection between the house and the garden space in front of the garage, which is planned for future use as a seasonal shop, along with several allocated parking spaces integrated into the layout. This strip of garden also forms the main approach to the house, and so the design needs to feel welcoming, family friendly, and easy to move through, while still offering moments of pause and interest.

Alongside this, the brief includes a small, enclosed garden intended for guests staying at The Old Store, http://bit.ly/4pw94eT. This space is envisioned as a quiet retreat, a place to rest and take shelter from the Tiree winds, offering a sense of privacy while remaining closely connected to the wider landscape and character of the island.
